Work Based Learning Sites Needed for Local Career Seekers

Port St. Lucie, Florida – Work based learning activities have proven to be a positive opportunity for career seekers to apply classroom and other formal/informal training and connecting it to the real world of work. Not only can it help students achieve academically but for all career seekers it expands their knowledge beyond the borders of their limited learning experiences. There are also a number of benefits to employers who participate in these programs as well.

“Work based learning allows an employer to mentor their potential workforce while training them in their specific needs,” said Glenda Harden, Vice President of Operations. “By participating in these activities, employers see may benefits including lowering their retention rate and decreasing recruitment costs.”

CareerSource Research Coast is offering a variety of work based learning opportunities to area employers. Programs currently being offered include:

  • On-the-Job Training Grants: provides for up to a 75% wage reimbursement to offset the training costs of a new hire. Employer selects the hire who must be determined eligible.
  • Internships: Employers select a qualified intern from an eligible pool of candidates to determine their potential as a full-time employee. CareerSource Research Coast covers the cost of wages, taxes and worker’s compensation. Interns may work up to 40 hours per week for 12 weeks.
  • Youth Work Experience: Employers provide short-term, meaningful work experience for a youth between the ages of 16-24 at no cost to the employer. Youth attend a two-week work readiness training prior to placement. Wages, taxes and worker’s compensation is covered.
  • Community Work Experience: Employers provide job training and work experience for individuals receiving cash assistance or food stamps to enhance their employment related skills in order to achieve self-sufficiency. Wages, taxes and worker’s compensation is covered.

“Employers interested in learning more about work based learning activities funded through CareerSource Research Coast should contact an Account Manager,” said Marcelo Dossantos, Director of Business Services. “Account Managers are available in each county and can come to your office to complete a pre-award review and begin the process of finding suitable candidates.”
