Workforce Readiness Taskforce Highlights Urgent Needs in Transportation & Logistics Sector
TREASURE COAST, FL — The CareerSource Research Coast (CSRC) Workforce Readiness Taskforce convened its quarterly meeting on March 5, bringing together employers, educators, and community partners to address one of the region’s fastest-growing sectors: transportation, warehousing, and logistics. With nearly 10,000 local workers already employed in the sector and rapid expansion visible along the I95 corridor, the Taskforce emphasized the critical need for stronger workforce pipelines and deeper collaboration across counties.
Christina Coble, Business Services Manager at CSRC, opened the meeting by noting that transportation and logistics employment in the tri-county region has grown at nearly double the national rate over the past decade. “It’s very obvious that this is a growing sector, particularly in St. Lucie County,” she shared, citing the surge in new logistics facilities across the region.

Industry Panel Identifies Most Pressing Workforce Gaps
A panel of industry and training experts, including representatives from Walmart Distribution Center, Armellini Express Lines, and Indian River State College, highlighted several urgent challenges:
- Severe shortages of over-the-road (OTR) truck drivers.
“A lot of people are getting their CDLs thinking they’re going to be a local driver when the need is really for the over-the-road truck drivers,” noted Javon Welch of Armellini Express Lines. - High demand for school bus drivers, with wages not keeping pace.
“The pay scale is $17, $16 an hour. You can make that at McDonald’s and not have to deal with everybody’s kids,” one panelist explained. - Growing need for automation and maintenance technicians as logistics facilities modernize.
Walmart’s leadership emphasized that “we’re going to need automation technicians in the very near future,” noting difficulty finding qualified candidates locally.
Education & Training Providers Call for Stronger Partnerships
Training institutions echoed the need for deeper employer involvement. Jimmy Kern of Indian River State College stressed the importance of consistent, high-quality CDL training nationwide, noting that “the lack of competent, qualified, reasonably safe drivers… is where we’re missing the mark”.
Walmart shared its Share the Road outreach program, which brings tractor-trailers to schools to teach students about safe driving and introduce them to trucking careers. “It’s a great opportunity to show these students what the life of a truck driver is,” said Walmart’s Mike Lucci.
A Call for More Businesses to Join the Conversation
The Taskforce emphasized that solving workforce shortages requires more employers at the table, not only to share hiring needs but to collaborate on solutions, mentorship, training alignment, and outreach.
“We need to get more of the companies involved, not just schools training individuals,” one panelist urged, emphasizing the value of employers engaging directly with training programs and future workers.
Coble reinforced that the Taskforce exists to help businesses navigate workforce challenges collectively: “This is why we convene this group, bringing everybody together to understand the industry better and build solutions that work for our region.”
