Employment Report Shows Positive Improvement For Research Coast
Port St. Lucie, Florida – When faced with the recession, the Research Coast took a significant hit with unemployment rates soaring to over 13 percent. Six years later, the Research Coast is showing noteworthy improvement in unemployment and job growth.
According to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity Labor Market Institute’s employment report released today, the December 2015 unemployment rate in Indian River County was 5.9%, Martin County 4.7% and St. Lucie County 5.3%. All of these rates range from .3% to 1% less than a year ago. Out of a labor force of 259,705, there were 13,774 unemployed residents in the Research Coast.
“Declining unemployment is something we have been seeing fairly consistently over the last few years,” said Glenda Harden, Vice President of Operations. “It’s encouraging to see that more and more area career seekers are being matched with employers and our economy is benefiting.”
The Research Coast consists of two major Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), Port St. Lucie MSA covering Martin and St. Lucie Counties and Sebastian-Vero Beach MSA covering Indian River County. The Port St. Lucie MSA had the second‐highest over the year growth in education and health services employment (+6.8%) and tied for second highest over the year growth with the West Palm Beach‐Boca Raton‐Delray Beach Metro Division in government employment (+2.1%) out of all other Florida metro areas. The Sebastian‐Vero Beach MSA was tied with the Pensacola‐Ferry Pass‐Brent MSA for largest over the year gains in information employment, (+100 jobs) out of all Florida metro areas.
A great example of economy improvement is happening right now in Martin County.
