Paychecks for Patriots


There are jobs aplenty for veterans. “Paychecks for Patriots is a statewide hiring event to connect veterans and their families with local employers,” Kenneth Torres, the local veterans employment representative for CareerSource Flagler/Volusia, said.

On Thursday, Nov. 16, there’ll be two Paychecks for Patriots events in the Veteran Voice coverage area. Both are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. One will be in Volusia at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3282, 5810 S. Williamson Blvd. Port Orange. The other will be in St. Lucie at the Port St. Lucie Community Center, 2195 S.E. Airoso Blvd.

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, Florida National Guard, and Florida Department of Veterans Affairs cosponsor Paycheck for Patriots with others. Torres said the Volusia event is lined up with many desirable employers.

“This event, right now we have 25 employers,” he said. Torres added, “I have employers like Boston Whaler, Dougherty Manufacturing, Stewart-Marchman ACT, US FOODS.”
Victor Melendez, the local veterans employment representative at CareerSource Research Coast, said the Port St. Lucie event is also stocked with desirable employers — including the U.S. Postal Service.

“We currently have 33 employers registered for the event,” he said. Melendez said a couple might be added, but he’s having to be picky and is turning some employers away. “We had to put a cap on the number of employers we’d have at the event,” he said. Origins of P for P
